एक कुत्ता बहुत भूखा था। घूमते-घूमते उसे एक कसाई की दुकान के पास एक बड़ी हड्डी मिली। वह उसे मुँह में दबाकर खुशी-खुशी घर की ओर चल पड़ा।
रास्ते में एक छोटी नदी पड़ी, जिस पर एक पुल था। पुल पार करते समय कुत्ते ने नीचे पानी में देखा। उसे वहाँ एक और कुत्ता दिखा, जिसके मुँह में भी एक हड्डी थी।
कुत्ते ने सोचा, “अगर मैं इसकी हड्डी भी छीन लूँ, तो मेरे पास दो हड्डियाँ हो जाएँगी!” उसने ज़ोर से भौंकने के लिए मुँह खोला।
जैसे ही उसने मुँह खोला, उसकी हड्डी “छपाक” से पानी में गिर गई और बह गई। तब उसे समझ आया कि पानी में तो उसकी अपनी परछाईं थी। वह भूखा ही घर लौटा।
सीख (Moral of the Story)
लालच बुरी बला है; जो है उसमें संतोष रखो।
English Summary
A hungry dog finds a bone and, while crossing a bridge, sees his reflection in the water holding another bone. Greedy for both, he barks at it, dropping his own bone into the river. He goes home hungry, having learned that greed leads to loss.
