Colours and Shapes in Telugu: Names, Pronunciation, and Fun Activities for Kids

Colours and shapes are among the first words toddlers learn, and they are perfect for everyday Telugu practice. You can use them while dressing, playing, drawing, or shopping.

In Telugu, the word for colour is రంగు (rangu). You will often hear colours described as “erra rangu” (red colour) or “pachcha rangu” (green colour).

Colours in Telugu

  • Red – ఎరుపు (erupu); as an adjective, ఎర్ర (erra), as in ఎర్ర గులాబీ (erra gulaabi, red rose)
  • Green – ఆకుపచ్చ (aakupachcha), often shortened to పచ్చ (pachcha)
  • Yellow – పసుపు (pasupu), the same word as turmeric
  • Blue – నీలం (neelam)
  • Black – నలుపు (nalupu); adjective నల్ల (nalla)
  • White – తెలుపు (telupu); adjective తెల్ల (tella)
  • Orange – నారింజ రంగు (naarinja rangu), the colour of an orange
  • Pink – గులాబీ రంగు (gulaabi rangu), the colour of a rose
  • Purple – ఊదా రంగు (oodaa rangu)
  • Brown – గోధుమ రంగు (godhuma rangu), the colour of wheat
  • Grey – బూడిద రంగు (boodida rangu), the colour of ash

Notice how many Telugu colour names come from nature: turmeric, roses, oranges, wheat, and ash. This makes them easy to explain to children.

Shapes in Telugu

  • Circle – వృత్తం (vruttam); in everyday speech, గుండ్రం (gundram, round)
  • Square – చతురస్రం (chaturasram)
  • Triangle – త్రిభుజం (tribhujam)
  • Rectangle – దీర్ఘచతురస్రం (deergha chaturasram)
  • Star – నక్షత్రం (nakshatram); a star in the sky is చుక్క (chukka)
  • Heart – హృదయం (hrudayam); children often just say “heart”
  • Line – గీత (geeta)
